Default PAS's 70th Anniversary Astronomy Celebration Event on Oct 11 2018 at BMC of PVCC

PAS's 70th Anniversary Astronomy Celebration Event on Oct 11 2018 at BMC of PVCC

BMC is at 60th Street and Carefree Hwy.

Everyone is invited to attend this fantastic event.

Festivities begin indoors in the Aquila Building at 5pm and go to 9:45pm. The list of activities will be in a separate entry below.
Guest Speakers will also be joining this party and providing 20 minute presentations on the topics listed later in this forum thread.

Outdoors, the Planets will become visible about 7pm, so we are holding a huge star party on the Observing Deck just behind the Aquila Building from 7pm to 9:45pm. Please don't go down to the observing deck until the telescopes are set up. There will be vehicles driving on the walk way from the parking lot to the Observing deck to unload equipment. For your safety, stay in the Aquila building until 7pm, please. Please do not touch the telescopes.

We would love for everyone to attend and enjoy the evening celebrating 70 years of the Phoenix Astronomical Society!

Terri, Event Manager

More details to come....

the front of the room for the next speaker. The plan is to start
each speaker on the hour and half hour.
Once done, the Guest Speakers will go back to their promo tables

And amateur astronomers can and do contribute to this science using equipment from the simple to the complex. Even novices can observe and record star spectra to reveal the temperature, composition and age of stars, the nature of gases surrounding a star, and even the possible existence of other exoplanets orbiting a star.
* Bill's Promo Table with a demo of Spectroscopy can be found in AQH 141.

7pm: Bruce Kosaveach "The Future is Bright at Lowell Observatory"

7:30pm: Ron Walker "When The Earth Doesn't Rotate Fast Enough"
... With clouds, light pollution, a bright Moon, and rocks to trip over, there just has be be an easier way to outreach and introduce folks to the night sky. This is the story of my outreach.
* Ron has a Promo Table with a demo of building his planetarium in AQH 141.

8pm: Sam Insana "History of PAS"
... The Phoenix Astronomical Society has been one of the most active astronomy clubs in the nation over the last 70 years. Learn about the incredible guest speakers, star parties, field trips, citizen science projects, fun socials, public outreach, and astronomical achievements as a club and as individuals.
* Sam has a Promo table in the Lobby under the Star Chart. Please visit him to find out more about the History of PAS.

Default This is the Activity List for this event:

PAS Activities happening at the Oct 11 BMC Event in Aquila Building:

* Free Raffle at the PAS Table in the Hall Way
1 ticket per attendee. All ages welcome. You must be present to pick up your winnings by 9:45pm, but you don't have to be present during the drawing of your winning ticket. Just swing by the PAS table before 9:45pm. Last raffle ticket will be drawn at 9:30pm.
Tickets drawn will be taped to prizes. Show your winning ticket or check the list at the table for your winning numbers, which also lists which prize you won.
PAS Table will have handouts about the club and other info you may wish to swing by and pick up from Terri Finch, Event Manager.
Raffle Items, donated from various Sponsors, are listed in next Forum Thread.

* History of PAS table
Located under the beautiful star background electric wall hanging. Have a chat with Sam Insana about PAS's 70 years as an Astronomy Club.

* Meet & Greet the Guest Speakers throughout the event. Guest Speakers will be availble to answer questions about their presentation topic, and they may have handouts to pick up. These guest speakers have a table for you to visit: Dan Heim, Mike Marron, Ron Walker, Chet Schuler, Bill Powell & Sam Insana.

* Kids Coloring Corner inside the Aquila Building. Come color a picture to be added to the wall. Please take it home with you at the end of the event, or when you leave. The Coloring Corner will also have many activities happening such as word searches, cross word puzzles, and other pages you may do while at this event.

* Many telescopes set up on the Aquila building Observing Deck for your Viewing Pleasure. Please follow 3 rules about the Telescopes and the Observing Deck:
1) Please no white light around the Observing Deck. White light destroys your night vision and it takes a young person 20 minutes to fully dark adapt. Take your phone calls away from the deck, please.
2) Please do not touch the telescopes. Touching the telescopes moves it off the object we have provided for your viewing pleasure and thus we have to find the object again for the next person, or even you... in line. It's just easier for us if you do not touch the telescopes. Please.
3) Please do not go down to the Observing Deck until the start of the Star Party. Vehicles will be on the deck unloading equipment. For your safety, stay off the Observing Deck until the star party is set up.

* Space Safari Treasure Hunt: For a prize, go on a Treasure Hunt during the Star Party. See the PAS Table for your Space Safari Page, and you can borrow a pencil, and then do the Treasure Hunt and come back to the PAS Table to receive a prize. This is for ages 0-16. You can take as long as you need to complete the Treasure Hunt. Take lots of notes on the back of your page. You will be answering questions to receive your prize. This activity is Weather Permitting.

Default Weather Updates for this event

Weather Updates for this event:

Newest Weather Updates listed first, as they are the more accurate Weather forecast for Oct 11 Thursday...

As of Wednesday Oct 10:

As of 9:30 am this morning, the average of 9 different weather forecasts show 75% clouds 5 mph winds and 16% rain for Thursday night at BMC PVCC. This doesn't look good for stargazing but I will do another update tomorrow morning. Looks like we will be having the 70th Anniversary PAS indoor event regardless... meaning the indoor activites will still happen, even if we do not have the ability to look through telescopes: the lectures, the raffles, the children activities, the astronomy posters, the meteorites, the STEAM event from PVCC etc... If the clouds are thin enough and some bright objects are visible we may have telescope viewing also. The final decision on telescope attendance & if they will see anything that night, will be provided Thursday Morning Oct 11.

Come back to this forum thread for Thursday's Weather update.

-----------------------------

As of Tuesday Oct 9:

The average of 8 different weather forecasts as of 8:30 am this morning for Thursday night at BMC is 80% clouds 4 mph winds 30% rain which is similar to yesterday's forecasts which averaged 78% clouds 5.5 mph winds 29% rain.
There is a chance that most of the clouds will be higher, thinner clouds, perhaps allowing views of brighter objects like the Moon (up only a short time) Saturn, Mars, and maybe a double star. Satellite photos also show that most of the clouds could go north of us, but that will be a last minute call Thursday morning. Also, the potential for rain would make any telescope person bring a tarp to protect the scope in case it does rain.

Not looking good for having telescopes at this event.
However, the indoor portion of the event can still happen and does have a lot of exciting things going on!!!

-----------------------------

As of Monday Oct 8:

The following are 8 weather forecasts as of 9 am this morning Monday, for Thursday night at BMC PVCC
NOAA 68% clouds 3 mph winds 36% rain
14 day 71% clouds 9 mph winds 40% rain
Weather undgd 74% clouds 3 mph winds 24% rain
Clear outside 88% clouds 5 mph winds 4% rain
WC 90% clouds 5 mph winds 20% rain
Weather bug 50% clouds 9 mph winds
Skippy Sky 90% clouds 5 mph winds ?
Accuweather 96% clouds 5 mph winds 52% rain

Looking bad for stargazing.
