Default Quick Reminder from our Treasurer (PAS) about your Dues

Good morning All,

If you have paid your 2009 Dues to PAS, then you may delete this email.
If you are unsure, please check the link below for the current as of
1/17/09, PAS Roster.

Mike has asked me to send out a reminder that he hasn't received that many
renewal Dues from our membership. If you haven't already done so, please
download the dues sheet at this link http://www.pasaz.org/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=48
and get those dues to Mike right away!

If you can't get to the link, let me know so i can be sure your
membership on the PASaz.org website has you as a current PAS Member.

And please verify your data within the file is accurate. Send changes to
me or Mike. Thanks.

I previously wrote a posting covering the difference between being a member of PAS
and being a member of the PAS website. Please see this info at this link
http://www.pasaz.org/forums/showthread.php?t=184
if you are unsure of how PAS Membership in the club and Membership in the PASaz.org website works.

Please recall, Mike will be providing me with a list of those who have NOT
renewed, and are NOT current PAS Members for which I will use in
changing the status of your membership on the PASaz.org website.
Those who are not members will be changed to Guest.
What does this mean? When you access the website, you will
no longer be able to get to the Member's ONLY info, such as the
PAS roster, to check the status of your membership,
or the PAID star party info. And the list you are currently on
in my email, you will be removed from (which some of you probably
think is a good thing, but then you miss out on all the annoucements
you should be receiving throughout the year).

Jan 31st is the deadline. I asked Mike if we can make a deadline of the Feb PAS
meeting and he agreed that would be a good, last chance, to get your membership
paid up. So, if you haven't paid up, please do so soon.
Download the form, bring it with you to the Feb PAS Meeting, or mail it in
right away to Mike. Let's get everyone who wants to be a PAS Member,
updated and current on your dues.

We hope to see you at all PAS events throughout 2009.
Take care
Happy Tuesday to you!

The current roster has been added to that link, above.
Review it to be sure your info is correct, as well as
that you are paid up. If it doesn't say 2009 in the column on the right labeled PAID,
you are not current with PAS.

If you paid your dues and Mike didn't update the file, please email him
right away to verify he got your dues. Always turn in a dues sheet
when renewing your PAS Dues so there is a paper copy
of your transaction. And if Mike writes you a receipt, hang on to
it until you have confirmation through the website roster that you are paid up.

Thank you for your patience. Check the roster for accuracy of your
phone, address, email, etc.... send changes to Mike or me as soon
as you find the errors. Thanks.

Email written for Mike Marron to membership

Additional info:

One of our PAS members was asking me about the Dues and their due date. Let me clarify this
with the below info.

Dues are collected Oct - Dec.
The PAS Membership runs from Jan - Dec.
We try to have the current Roster posted by Feb
so that anyone needing that info can access it.

What do you need the info for? Well, as a PAS member, you can use the resources
of other club members. For instance, One of our members might want to learn how
to use their telescope. If they were to seek out this info via a member of another club,
such as SAC or EVAC and not be the member of those clubs at that time, the cost
of getting such instruction could be $100/hour. So, as a PAS member, getting instruction
from another PAS member is the cost of Dues. And having access to the PAS Roster,
gives that newbie (the one seeking the telescope info) a chance to know who
he can ask and not feel that he has to pay for the service.

Another thing your Dues do for you is they pay the PAS bills. Yes, clubs have bills.
PAS has insurance that is paid yearly. It covers accidental injuries during a star party.
I dont' know that it covers our equipment as that is individually owned, but in case
a non PAS Member were to hurt themselves at a star party, the club is covered for that.

PAS also belongs to the Astronomical League for which each PAS member gets
a copy of the AL Newsletter that comes to you by mail every other month. The cost
of this comes out of your dues you pay to PAS.

The newsletter isn't a cheap process either. Each month Don puts a lovely newsletter
together and makes the copies, and sends out the ones to those who receive it by
post office delivery. PAS charges only $5 more to have it delivered by mail, rather than
retrieving it from the internet. That $5 really does not cover the cost of creating,
printing, stamping and then mailing it.

These are just a few things that you need to consider when paying your Dues. To
function as an entity with bills to pay, Dues need to be collected to keep the club
going. And each year, it appears that we go into the hole... that means more is
going out in expenses than what PAS is bringing in. It is only lucky that Matt Kohl
was able to get us a large donated sum to keep the club going or we'd have to
raise the rate of the dues, yet again.

The question raised by the PAS member that I'd like to mention most is the date
at which the membership was paid for. PAS will allow those who pay from July
to the end of the year, to have all of July - Dec of that year, plus the following year
as their membership paid. We don't prorate. We used to and it got to be too confusing.
And then everyone who was on prorate, wanted us to do it again the following year
and that was too much. The membership runs from Jan to Dec. If you pay after
July 1st, your membership goes for the rest of that year and to the end of the next.
You get 6 months free. But if you pay prior to July 1, your membership covers
only that current year.

Example:
Pay in May 2008 - Membership goes from May 2008 to Dec 2008
Pay on or after July 1 2008 - Membership goes from the date you paid to Dec 2009.

And then we have the student discount rate.
Again, it is from Jan to Dec with the same situation as the example above.
To get the student discount rate, you just need to show a PAS member
your Student ID. This can be from any school or college. And each
year to get the discount again, you need to show that ID and have
the PAS Member sign your membership form so Mike knows you
showed ID. Or show it to Mike. Which ever works best for you.

And one more option you can do on our Membership form,
you can sign up for 6 months. Yes, it costs a little more
than the 6 month rate but the idea is that you are a winter
visitor and only want membership for the months you
are in Arizona. So, for instance, your best month to
sign up as a 6 month visitor is November, so that you
have membership to May. Most Winter Visitors
leave AZ or Phx when school lets out in May.
Your 6 month membership starts the date you pay your
dues and Mike marks it on the roster as May 2009, if you
paid in November 2008. This way we know you are a 6 month
member. We appreciate membership, even if it is only 6 months.

Now, why would you want to be a 6 month member? Well,
as a PAS member, you can get in on the PAID star parties.
There are many PAS Members ONLY situations, where by
if you aren't a member, you can't attend that event, or be
involved in it in anyway. Such as the Mayer star party at
Chris's observatory. Once a month, the darkest skies ever!!!!
open up to PAS Members to attend. Non members can not attend,
not even by invite. And the same with Paid star parties. You can
attend but you won't get paid if your membership isn't current
on the roster. How much do you get paid? Depends on how many
telescopes attend, and we equally divide up the monies that
come in from that, as well as take a small portion for paperwork
for PAS. Those doing the paid star parties have been happy thus far
with their portions.

So, as far as membership in PAS goes and the dues that are due,
one needs to consider PAS has bills, and membership has its perks.
Being a PAS member is really an awesome thing and we appreciate
your membership.

I hope this helps those who are confused.

Have you ever thought about how much extra work it would be to
have everyone's membership due based on when they joined?
PAS used to be that way. You join in Feb, and you owe the following
Feb. And when I was editor, it said that on your mailing label. It told
you and me when you were due to pay your dues, and I would
then send a dues sheet with your copy of the newsletter. Some of
you may remember this. Well, we did away with it when we went digital.
The newsletter only gets mailed to about 5 PAS members currently.
We have no way to track who paid on what month other than
what is put into the PAS Roster. And so that is why PAS changed
the membership due date to December, so that the following year,
everyone is a PAS member and it is less work on Mike and now Don,
keep track of who gets a newsletter and who doesn't, or in this case,
who is and isn't a current member for various reasons.
I find it easier this way. Those in the club should also as they only
have to hear about dues being due from Oct to Dec, if they are paid
up. Only those who don't get caught up get notices after the dues were
due. Easier on all of us this way.

So, I do hope everyone has an awesome day. If this doesn't make
sense, feel free to drop me an email at Events@pasaz.org so I can help you with it.
Thank you for your patience, and for reading this posting.
